How to Apply

The Greene School is a tuition-free, statewide public charter high school — which means any Rhode Island family can apply, regardless of where you live. Because we typically receive more applications than we have seats, enrollment is decided by a random lottery, not by grades, test scores, or an interview.

We are also thrilled to be adding grades 6-8 over the next few years, starting with a founding 6^th grade group in the fall of 2027! 7^th grade will be added in fall of 2028 and 8^th grade in fall 2029.

Here's exactly how the process works, from application to your first day on campus.

Step 1: Apply Through EnrollRI

All Rhode Island charter public schools, including The Greene School, share one common application through EnrollRI, the state's public school enrollment system.

Create an account at Enroll RI, add your student, and select The Greene School.
You can log back in anytime before the deadline to make changes to your school selections.
There's no essay, interview, or academic requirement. Every Rhode Island student is eligible.

Application windows open in mid-November and typically close in mid-March, with the lottery held on April 1. Because these dates shift slightly each year, check Enroll RI for the current cycle's exact deadline.

Step 2: The Lottery

On April 1, participating charter schools — including The Greene School — run their lotteries for all students who applied by the deadline.

The lottery is entirely random. No one at The Greene School reviews applications ahead of time or influences who is selected.
If you have more than one child applying, each is entered individually, though many charter schools (Greene included) give weight to sibling applicants — reach out to our admissions team if you'd like specifics on how that applies to your family.
Students not selected are placed on a waitlist in the order the lottery generates, rather than being turned away outright.

Step 3: After the Lottery

This is where families often have the most questions, so here's what happens next:

If your student is selected: The Greene School will reach out directly with next steps for enrollment, including registration paperwork and important dates for orientation.
If your student is waitlisted: Don't count yourselves out. Movement on the waitlist is common over the spring and summer as other families make their enrollment decisions. We'll contact you if a seat opens up.
Post-Lottery Applications: If you missed the pre-lottery deadline, you can still apply. EnrollRI opens a Post-Lottery Application window (typically mid-April) for families applying after April 1. These students are added to the end of the waitlist in the order received, and we'll reach out if space becomes available in your student's grade.
Waitlists reset each year. If your student isn't offered a seat this year, you'll need to reapply for the following school year — waitlist positions don't carry over.
